A Dreary Morning in the Chippewa Valley

It's a dreary-looking day today in Eau Claire. The sky and ground is looking pretty similar with the overcast Chippewa Valley and snow-blanketed landscape. Light fog can be seen surrounding the distant hills. On a positive note, though, the temperatures today are going to remain comfortable. Currently, the temperature in Eau Claire, Wisconsin is 28 degrees F, but it feels like 32 degrees F. Our high today should climb above freezing, reaching 36 degrees F as the clouds part a little bit by early afternoon. The winds today are calm and will not be getting much stronger. Currently, we have 1 mph wind coming out of the SW, with gusts up to 3.8 mph. As you can see by the following image, we can expect clouds but do not have to worry about any precipitation today.

Last Weekend of February

It is currently just after 11 pm, and the thick cloud cover is sticking around. The wind is making the 24 degree F temperature feel 8 degrees colder outside.

The current temperature is not far from today's high of 29 degrees F.

The dew point is sitting at 20.

It may be a good idea to have some ice melt on hand, since we will be seeing some freezing fog tonight and into the early hours of Sunday. This freezing fog will leave a thin, icy layer on your sidewalks and give the trees a picturesque frosted appearance as the sun comes up tomorrow morning. The sun should burn this off as it gains power throughout the day, bringing us a mild last Sunday of the month.

How did Q treat you?

Well, Eau Claire, I hope you enjoy snow. Apparently the groundhog keeps seeing his shadow every time he pokes his head out of his hole. Most of Eau Claire easily received half a foot of snow by this morning. The snow continued throughout the day but not with the accumulating force of the overnight snowfall.

To put this year's winter into perspective, the following article compares this year's snowfall with the snowfall of last year: http://www.weau.com/weather/weathernotebook/headlines/Snowfall-this-year-putting-last-winter-to-shame-191559031.html

We are currently sitting at a mild 25 degrees F with calm air. The snow is still lightly falling from the overcast skies, making it feel like 18 degrees F. Tomorrow, there is a 30 percent chance that more snow will continue. The temperatures tomorrow look to be a few degrees warmer than today, climbing into the low thirties.

Winter Storm Q

An update on Q:

If you haven't been near a TV or radio or computer lately, you may not be aware that Winter Storm Q is rolling through our area. The storm is being fueled by a subtropical jet that is moving across Mexico. This warm gulf air is mixing with the continental polar cold air coming down from Canada. We can expect to see snow around 2:00am. Don't panic, though! Q is not going to be as crazy as originally predicted as it passes over Wisconsin. But look out if you are traveling to the Northeastern United States!

Right now, we are experiencing 2 mph wind out of the east-northeast with gusts up to 6 mph. The temperature is hovering around 20 degrees F. The skies are overcast and ready to drop some snow. Sleep well, Eau Claire, and get ready to shovel.
Are you looking for a reason to smile today? Look up! The sky is as clear and as blue as can be. The sun is working its magic to melt off some of our icy sidewalks and roadways this afternoon. The wind has also backed off dramatically today. The current 1 mph NE wind with gusts up to 6 mph is a huge improvement from the 20-30 mph gusts we were experiencing yesterday.

Right now, we are experiencing 17 degree F temperatures with a wind chill of 8 degrees F. By the middle of the night, though, expect below zero temperatures to come nipping at your nose.

As a fun fact for the day, "snow," "cold," and "wind" are all trending words on Twitter in the Eau Claire area today. I was personally surprised that "ice" did not take today's top spot.

Remebrrrrrr Your Scarf!

The cold Canadian winds started howling through the Chippewa Valley last night, leaving freezing drizzle and snow flurries on the roadways by morning. Today's high is 9 degrees F, but the wind chill will remain well below zero all day. Wind gusts coming out of the NW will be blowing through the area throughout the day. Expect to see gusts up to 30 mph. It is definitely a good day to wear a face mask and keep as much skin covered as you can to prevent frost bite.

Currently the sky is mostly clear with a few skattered cumulous clouds. This will change throughout the week as a low pressure system builds and brings snow with it.

Chilly Weather to Come

Good evening, Eau Claire! Today has been a much cooler day than what we experienced yesterday. Currently, we the temperature is 13 degrees F, but it feels like it is below 10 degrees F. The current wind is blowing through the area from the SW at 1.6 mph with gusts up to 7.6 mph. The mostly clear skies have now become overcast as the sun sets. The cloud cover will remain through the night, possibly bringing light snow showers. The temperature will dip down to 0 degrees F at the lowest point tonight.

Tomorrow will be a bit chillier than today, and the clouds will stick around. By early next week, expect more snow to start falling. We aren't out of the winter weather yet, folks!

Will You Be My Valentine, Frosty?

Well, Eau Claire residents, I hope you are enjoying the brisk but mild weather as you recovery from your Valentine's Day! As forcasted, we recieved a thick blanket of snow by yesterday morning. The 3-inch snowfall was the perfect consistency for constructing a Valentine's Day snowman. I saw a few of Frosty's friends coming to life around town yesterday morning. Much of the snow melted off throughout the early and mid portion of the day. The 14th remained comfortable and sunny for most of the day. The air was calm and the skies were uneventful, having a few small cumulous clouds scattered across the blue expanse. By late afternoon, we saw some cululonimbus cloud formation to the east but nothing that brought a threat of further precipitation to Eau Claire.

Goodbye Sun, Hello Snow

As predicted, the sunshine showed itself yesterday for a few hours. And, as an added smile-enducer, we even saw sunny skies for part of the day today in Eau Claire! Nothing cures the winter blues like a nice helping of sunshine with a side of blue skies.

Currently, we have reverted back to total cloud cover. The temperature, however, remains mild. Right now, we are experiencing a balmy 41 degree F temperature with a light 1.6 mph breeze out of the SW to aid in some ice melting.

By tonight, temperatures will dip just below freezing to around 28 degrees F with a 90 percent chance of precipitation by midnight, totalling a trace to three inches. We may see snowflakes starting to fall early evening.

Enjoy the rest of today's warmth, because tomorrow will hover around the freezing mark. For those of you out there with a significant other, cuddle together for your Valentine's Day, since there is a chance we will see more scattered snowfall Thursday. This snow, however, should not accumulate.

Danger on the Roadways

Sunday was definitely a soupy, sloshy day. Throughout the day, temperatures crept from 28 degrees F to 35 degrees F. The sleet and freezing rain during the first half of the day resulted in dangerous driving conditions, leading to numerous accidents around the Eau Claire area. One of these accidents left my roommate with a totalled car and a trip to the chiropractor. Although the  wind gusts remained low, the roads and sidewalks gained a thick layer of ice from the wintry mix.

By the afternoon, precipitation changed over to rain, leaving the Eau Claire side walks and streets filled with deep slush by this morning. The winter weather advisory remained in effect until 6:00 AM. Dense cloud cover has blanketed the Eau Claire skies all day today. Currently in Eau Claire, we are experiencing temperatures hovering around 29 degrees F and 3.8 mph winds coming out of the SW. Wind gusts have not exceeded 12 mph so far today.

Temperatures tonight are expected to dip down to 13 degrees F, so make sure to sprinkle some salt on the sidewalks to prevent further ice buildup this evening. Temperatures tomorrow will be comparable to today, but we may get to see a bit more sunshine throughout the day, since the national satellite radar is looking like clearer skies are on their way.

Blah Blah Saturday...

Saturday was a pretty blah weather day in Eau Claire, WI. The temperature hovered around the 30 degree F mark and winds remained low. It was an overcast but not overly dark day. Anyone who has ventured out on Sunday so far is surely wishing it was still Saturday. More Sunday weather updates to follow soon.

Bland and Beautiful

Good evening, Eau Claire! The weather was mild for us today. We hit a high of 26 degrees F today when the sun broke through the clouds. Right now, we are sitting at 14 degrees F with a fair night ahead and not a cloud in the sky. It's a great night to get outside for a stroll, since the air is still, allowing for a much warmer feel than we have been seeing lately.

Good news, folks! Tomorrow will likely bring enough warmth to melt away some of the ice on your sidewalks (I hear mail carriers everywhere rejoicing.)! Enjoy the nice Saturday, because Sunday is looking like it will be a sloppy one. With the higher temperatures, we may see some rain and ice mixed in with the expected snowfall. No worries, though, as our wintery mix will be nothing compared to what the northeastern part of the country is currently experiencing with Winter Storm Nemo.

Saying Goodbye to Thursday

The current temperature in Eau Claire, WI is 26 degrees F. It is expected to dip down to 9 above later tonight. The wind is remaining light tonight, currently moving at 3.8 mph, coming from the NE. The night skies are thickly overcast, as they had been all day. It's not looking like we will be seeing much sunshine in Eau Claire over the course of the next few days. Throughout the day today, we saw some freezing drizzle. Some of this drizzle is still lingering, so be careful on the sidewalks. The lingering precipitation should dissipate over night. The low pressure we have been experiencing will also be moving away tonight, being replaced by a building high pressure front from Canada by morning.

Oh, Canada!

Ok, Eau Claire-ians, time for a winter weather update! I hope you all enjoyed the glimpse of warmth from the sunshine we got over the weekend, because the clouds are starting to move in. Today only reached 14 degrees F and is currently sitting at 5 above zero. As clouds accumulate tonight, you can expect the temperature to drop a few more degrees. Right now, a storm front is making its way through Wisconsin from Canada, heading SE. Bundle up for the upcoming Alberta Clippers! Brrr! This weather will hit tonight, leaving us with another inch or so of snow by morning. As the front passes through the area, you can expect even more frigid air and light flurries through Tuesday afternoon. For the winter weather enthusiasts out there, don't worry, more winter will hit throughout the week. These Alberta Clippers may leave the area with a few more measurable snow flakes by Wednesday.

Blue Skies Smilin' at Me...

Good morning, Eau Claire! I hope you piled on a few extra layers for the day. It's going to be a cold one. Upon scraping the frost off of my car's windshield today, I found that I was also forced to scrape a thick, frosty layer from the inside of the windows. I then proceeded to throw on a second scarf. Temperatures are still sitting around 10 below right now with a wind chill of -23 degrees F. The area will be in a wind chill advisory until noon today. Although the temperatures are biting, the skies are blue and cloudless, so don't expect any snowman building materials to fall in your yard today.
